The media’s main source on Syria turns out to be a man in his UK home
The mainstream media has long referred to one particular source for inside information on the ongoing Syrian conflict, yet it turns out to be a one-man operation run from a house in the United Kingdom.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has constantly appeared in top media publications, predominantly with figures and facts about crimes carried out by the Assad regime and Russian forces.
Judging by the name, it the sounds like a dependable organization and the big names in mainstream media like Guardian, CNN, Sky News and Reuters have referred to the organization frequently over the last few years.
However, it turns out that, rather than a ‘UK-based monitoring group’ as Sky News recently labeled it, SOHR is run out of a house in Coventry by Rami Abdulrahman, a Syrian Sunni Muslim who has not visited his home country in over 15 years.
SOHR has been accused of only covering violent acts of the Syrian government forces and, since it began its campaign, heavily one-sided reports against Russia, prompting Kremlin Foreign Ministry spokeswoman to label Abdulrahman as a source “no more reliable than a waiter in a pizzeria”.
As a result, RT went to the UK to expose the one-man observatory, and eventually tracked him down at an event in Kazakhstan where he admitted he had not been to Syria since 2000.
The mainstream press often goes to extreme lengths to fabricate stories but the example of how simple, and in plain sight, it has been carried out in the case of the SOHR should prompt us all to deeply research the source of the stories we are fed by the biggest names in media.
